How to get your brand cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity & Google AI

AI assistants now answer the questions your customers used to Google. Here is the five-part system we use to get your brand cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI.

To get your brand cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, you need to be an entity that models can describe with confidence: the same facts about you everywhere, clear answers on your own pages, structured data that removes guesswork and independent sources that back you up. Then you measure it every month, because AI answers change faster than search rankings ever did.

TL;DR — KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • AI assistants recommend entities they can describe with confidence.
  • Consistency across the web matters more than keywords.
  • Put a 40–60 word direct answer at the top of key pages.
  • Schema + llms.txt make you machine-readable.
  • Track 20 real questions across 5 AI engines monthly.

1. Why AI answers are the new page one

When someone asks ChatGPT for “the best clinic in Gulshan,” there is no page two. The model names two or three brands, cites a source or two, and the conversation moves on. If you’re not in that answer, you don’t exist for that customer.

The good news: the signals models rely on are learnable. They overlap heavily with good SEO, but they reward clarity, consistency and corroboration far more than keyword density ever did.

“Models don’t rank pages. They recommend entities they can describe with confidence.”

This matters for every kind of business, not only big brands. A dental clinic in Dubai, a software firm in Toronto and a garment exporter in Dhaka all face the same shift: buyers ask an assistant for a shortlist before they ever visit a website. Being on that shortlist is now part of marketing, and it is something you can work on deliberately.

What changes compared with classic SEO

Classic SEO asks: which page best matches this query? AI search asks a different question: which brand can I safely recommend, and which sources prove it? That shift has three practical consequences.

  • Being mentioned matters as much as being linked. Unlinked brand mentions in trusted places still teach a model who you are.
  • Contradictions cost you. If two directories list different services or addresses, a model has less confidence and is more likely to leave you out.
  • Answers beat articles. A model lifts the clearest sentence it can find. A page that hides its answer under an intro rarely gets quoted.

2. Become an entity, not a website

Start by making sure every place that describes you says the same thing: your name, what you do, where you are, who you serve. Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, Wikidata where relevant: consistency is what lets a model “know” you.

Entity checklist 0 / 6 done

Work through the checklist above in order. The first items are quick fixes you can finish this week; the last ones take longer because they depend on other people publishing about you. Write a single “brand fact sheet” (legal name, short description, founding year, locations, services, key people) and copy from it every time you fill in a profile, so the wording never drifts.

3. Write answers, not articles

Models lift clean, self-contained answers. Put a 40–60 word direct answer at the top of every key page, then expand. Use the exact question as a heading. Avoid burying the answer under three paragraphs of preamble.

A simple page pattern that gets quoted

  • Question as the H2: “How much does a clinic website cost in Dhaka?”
  • Direct answer first: one or two sentences with the actual answer, including a number or range where you can give one.
  • Supporting detail: what changes the answer, with a short list or table.
  • Proof: a link to your pricing, a case study or an external source that confirms it.

This is the same pattern we use on service pages for clients in the US, UK, UAE and Bangladesh. It reads well for people, and it gives a model a sentence it can quote without rewriting.

Turn your FAQ into an answer library

Collect the questions your sales and support teams hear every week, then give each one a short, specific answer on your site. Group them by topic on the relevant service page rather than dumping them on one long FAQ page. Questions about price, timelines, location and comparisons (“X vs Y”) are the ones assistants are asked most often, so answer them plainly, with numbers where you can.

4. Speak machine: schema & llms.txt

Structured data removes guesswork. Add Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema, and publish an llms.txt file that points models to your most important pages. Here is what one looks like for a fictional clinic network:

# Meridian Health
> 40-clinic healthcare network in Dhaka with same-day online booking.

## Key pages
- [Find a clinic](https://meridian.example/clinics)
- [Book an appointment](https://meridian.example/book)
- [Our doctors](https://meridian.example/doctors)

Be realistic about llms.txt: it is an emerging convention, not an official standard, and not every AI system reads it. It is cheap to publish and does no harm, but schema, clear pages and external citations do far more of the work.

Keep the schema honest and in sync with what the page says. Use sameAs links in your Organization markup to point at the profiles from your checklist, so crawlers can connect the dots. If you don’t want to write JSON-LD by hand, our free schema markup generator produces valid code you can paste into your site.

5. Earn citations models trust

Models corroborate. One mention on your own site is a claim; five mentions across reputable publications, directories and review sites is a fact. Pitch data-led stories, contribute expert quotes, and keep reviews flowing.

Rule of thumb: aim for at least five independent, reputable sources that describe you the same way before you expect AI assistants to name you. Citations take weeks to be picked up, so start early and keep going.

Where to look for citations

  • Industry directories and associations in each market you serve.
  • Local and trade press that publishes expert commentary.
  • Review platforms your customers already use, with replies to every review.
  • Podcasts, webinars and guest articles where your team speaks as specialists.
  • Comparison and “best of” lists, which AI assistants cite often.

Reviews deserve special attention. Assistants often summarise what customers say about a business, so a steady flow of recent, detailed reviews on the platforms that matter in your market gives them something positive and specific to repeat. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to criticism calmly and publicly.

6. Measure it monthly

Pick 20 questions your customers actually ask. Run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews every month. Track whether you’re mentioned, cited, or recommended first. That’s your new ranking report.

Log the results in a simple sheet: question, engine, mentioned (yes/no), position, cited URL. Over a few months you will see which pages models trust and which competitors they prefer, and that tells you where to write next. For a quick first look, try our AI visibility checker.

What to do with the results

When a competitor is recommended and you are not, open the sources the assistant cites. They show you exactly which directories, articles or review sites the model trusts for that question. Get listed or mentioned there, improve the page on your site that should answer the question, and check again next month. Expect gradual progress rather than overnight jumps: models and their search indexes update on their own schedules.

Key takeaways

  • Fix your entity first: identical facts on every profile and directory.
  • Open every key page with a 40–60 word answer to a real question.
  • Add Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema, plus an llms.txt file.
  • Build independent citations; your own site alone is not enough.
  • Track 20 questions across five AI engines every month.
